2011 ECONOMICS CHALLENGE WINNERS The “Eagles” team from Park High School in Livingston, coached by teacher John Feckanin, won first place in the annual Economics Challenge held in Helena Monday (March 7). Brady Flaten brought back a team from Glasgow and for the second time in three years, placed second in the event. Twenty-one teams from 10 schools, including the first-ever American Indian team from Frazer High, competed in the 16th annual event, which had a record number of teams participating. Individual winners were: lst place, Crystal Elenbaas, a senior at Helena Christian School, followed by Travis Pattengale in second and Rachel Noble in third, both from Park High. All team members received a Certificate along with a complimentary T-shirt. This year’s shirt was designed by Helena Christian student Stephanie Maynard, who received a cash award from MCEE for her winning entry. First year teacher and new to Montana teacher Kami Cox brought four girls from Frazer High to the competition. The girls were a bit intimidated but were happy to have had the experience, and also later enjoyed their tour of the Capitol and being recognized on the floor of the Senate. The Challenge in Montana is a part of a nationwide collaboration between the national and state Councils on Economic Education and the Federal Reserve system. The Montana event also receives substantial financial support from the Montana Bankers Association. The Challenge is one of numerous activities that the Montana Council on Economic Education offers teachers in an effort to provide them and their students with methods and programs to teach and learn economics in an interesting and engaging manner. MCEE Executive Director Connie Genger said that the event helps students realize the significance of economics, and to be aware that they have peers across the state who are knowledgeable on the subject. Most students love to compete and have the opportunity to do so both on an individual and team basis during the Economics Challenge, she stated. First place team Park High will move on to the regional semi-finals to compete for an all- expense paid trip to the National Economics Challenge in New York City.
